Double Needle Coptic Stitch
Wednesday, August 7th, 2013 -- 9am - 1pm
Teachers: Daniel and Karleigh Heywood
Class Fee: $50 (Includes the materials for your book)
Tools You'll Need: The Basic Tool Kit (see "The Details" page)
The Ethiopian coptic stitch dates back to the 4th century. It's a beautiful book with an exposed spine in which you can see the sewing of the pages. The coptic stitch book will open flat for maximum use of the pages. It works great for sketchbooks, photo albums and journals. It's also a nice book for recipes because you don't have to hold it open while cooking in the kitchen and it works great as a wedding guestbook too. You will get to delve into our stash of printed and handmade papers from around the world to create your own book.

Decorative Pastepapers
for Bookbinding & Other Crafts
An example of a book made with Pastepaper |
Tools You'll Need: The class fee covers paper to decorate, paste, pigment for the paste, and a paintbrush for each student. In addition, students are encouraged to bring any additional large (1”- 4” is a good size) paintbrushes that they might have (each brush makes its own distinct texture, so variety is good), as well as any textured tools that might leave interesting marks in the paste. Examples: sponges, rubber texturing combs (found at craft stores), spatulas, scrapers, stamps or patterned rollers, or anything else you think might make an interesting pattern.

Artists' Books:
Conquering the Chaotic Creative Process
Teacher: Karleigh Heywood
Class Fee: $40
Tools You'll Need: A blank sketchbook to house your ideas and your chaotic creative thoughts ready to be found, organized and expanded.
Debunking the myth that artists' books are too difficult to make, this class will give you new understanding to organizing your creative ideas. Karleigh will be unlocking her idea book for you to take a sneak peak at the creative process and her way of storing and building ideas. You will have the opportunity to create your own artists' book ideas in the class and start your own creative ideas book.

Friday August 9, 2013 -- 6 - 9pm
Teacher: Nate Ashby
Class Fee: $40
Tools You'll Need: A journal and any art supplies to be creative with. A supply idea list will be emailed to you when you register.
In this class it should be understood that everything is a great idea. We will explore different possibilities of journaling from the content, style, and binding. We will look at examples of alternative journaling. We will troubleshoot your creative or alternative journaling ideas to get them to function. Nate will show mistakes in journaling and the potential for amazing recovery. In this class, we will create something unusual for yourself and your descendants. If you have books, art, personal pages, photographs, documents, or anything of that nature you would like to preserve in a journal, bring them to the class if you would like.

awesome! I'll be signing up for the 10 book workshop. I wish I could go to more (particularly the raised and inset designs one) but I'll be out of town the last half of that week. all the classes look great!
ReplyDelete*Anguished cry of NO* I am already attending the International Organization of Lace conference that week. I really hope you consider other workshop dates in the Provo area in the future.
ReplyDeleteWhile I have ample experience with Coptic/exposed spine style books I have long wanted to learn to make leather bound books.
